This stems from the fact that she fears without a father; her family would be insecure. If only Mr. Wingfield were around, she would be financially secure. She is incapable of seeing how their desperate living conditions, as well as physical conditions in the case of Laura, have affected her children, causing them to be closed off to the outside world.
